Study options
Victoria University offers the following Heritage Materials Science programmes:
- Master of Science
- Postgraduate Diploma
- Postgraduate Certificate
Students require a Bachelor's degree with a B grade average or higher at 300 level to enter the programme.
Non-science students should take CHEM191, an introductory chemistry course held in the summer trimester. The course can be completed extramurally, apart from a practical laboratory week, held at the end of February. More information can be found on the Victoria University website.
Master of Science (MSc) in Heritage Materials Science
A Masters is a research degree. As such, it is suited to students with some previous scientific laboratory experience. It consists of two parts and is normally completed in two calendar years.
Part 1 (the first year) is coursework, and assessed by assignments, seminar presentations, an examination and a practicum report.

Part 2 (the second year) is a full-time research project, leading to a thesis.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGDipSc) in Heritage Materials Science
A Postgraduate Diploma can be completed in one year full time or up to 4 years part time. Students should have already completed a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline - not necessarily in science. Students without previous tertiary-level science must undertake an introductory chemistry course such as CHEM 191 prior to admission to the course.
