It’s time for the annual New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (Wellington Branch) Chemistry Quiz! Hosted in association with Victoria University of Wellington, the quiz is open to teams from all secondary schools in the greater Wellington area. Teams are made up of four students from years 12 or 13. This year, we can accommodate up to two teams per school. The quiz will be held on Wednesday, 14 June at Victoria University in the Recreation Centre gym.
Sign in for the quiz will open at 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start and the quiz is expected to finish by 9:00 pm. Entertainment will be provided for teachers and parents. This gives them a chance to get together over supper while the students scratch their heads at the diabolical chemistry questions thrown at them by the evening’s hosts! The quiz will challenge students' chemistry curriculum knowledge, their general chemistry knowledge and their general knowledge, and there are some great prizes to be won for both the students and their schools.
Please visit https://goo.gl/forms/9szMGmYs4X56DjEG2 to register your teams. We ask that you complete registration by 22 May, and then advise us of team names and the names of your team members by 3 June via email. If you have any problems with the online registration, or if you have any other questions, please contact us at email@example.com.
Senior Lab Experience Days
This year, we will be running full-day (9:00 – 3:00pm) Senior Lab Experience Days, with the Physics Lab Experience Days running June 20th – 22nd and the Chemistry Lab Experience Days running June 27th – 29th. We will provide lunch for the students. These programmes will be suitable for Year 13 and advanced Year 12 students.
To register for your class, please use the form provided at this link: https://vuw.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bEjujLD8CC1BAX3.
Great news for physics! We have been able to increase the number of students we can offer this experience to, and can now take up to 25 students per school. Please let us know if you would like to change the number of students you can bring.
Physics Day: We will delve into the inner workings of the atom and learn about how unstable atoms like to lose a little energy by radioactive decay. This will lead us into the history of some of radioactivity and we’ll meet some of the great 20th century physicists on the way, from Rutherford to Curie, Einstein and Fermi. Students will learn about the ionising and non-ionising radiation and will have a chance to measure the radioactivity coming off of some safe and interesting materials. In the afternoon, we will discuss the safety of radioactive materials and their positive and very negative contributions to the world. Finally, we will end with some microwave oven science – making popcorn, sparks and memories.
Chemistry Day: This day will focus on pharmaceuticals. The morning will involve the synthesis of a standard pharmaceutical, but it will also cover techniques for how to monitor reactions. In the afternoon, the students will gain hands-on experience with some of the spectroscopic instruments used in the characterisation of pharmaceuticals, including IR and NMR spectroscopy. This will involve workshops on spectroscopy that will be geared towards the experience level of each school.
These workshops fill up fast so you will need to get in early as bookings will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the costs incurred in running these events, please note that there is a $100 cancellation fee. In order to ensure that all able students are able to attend our programs, we invite schools to apply for scholarships to aid in the transport costs of attending these events. Please note on your application form if you wish to be considered for this additional funding. For further information and questions about the Senior and Junior Lab Experience Days, please direct your enquiries to Robin Fulton (outreach coordinator) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
