Environmental Monitoring

Sampling sites in the South Island

We use T-RFLP analysis, a new molecular technique we have developed, to compare microbial communities in soil and ground water, based on their DNA.

This research has application in forensic science. By monitoring the staged release of commensal bacteria (the normal microflora of our internal and external body surfaces) the time since death can be determined.

We are also working towards understanding subterranean geochemical processes by characterising microbial species in wells from all over New Zealand.
