Biodiversity and Conservation

Gibson's Albatross

We are using DNA sequence analysis to complement traditional morphological descriptions to create a new methodology for the next generation of biological systematists.

To date we have analysed:

  • tuatara
  • albatrosses
  • cicadas
  • native parrots (kaka and kea).

A new initiative characterising New Zealand crab spiders (thomisids) is being undertaken with the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa.

Current Research

Thomisid spider

We are currently involved in the following projects:

  • systematics of thomisid spiders
  • evolution of native parrots and parakeets
  • Cook Islands flycatcher conservation
