Classics receives Public Contribution Excellence Award
21 December 2011

The Classics, Greek and Latin team - consisting of Dr Diana Burton, Dr Judy Deuling, Dr Mark Masterson, Professor Arthur Pomeroy, Dr Babette Puetz, Professor Jeff Tatum, Dr Matthew Trundle, Dr David Rosenbloom, Dr Simon Perris and Hannah Webling - consistently apply their expertise to make an extensive public contribution in numerous areas. The impressive scope of the team's contribution - demonstrating the relevance of the ancient world to modern life - has ranged from school visits, public lectures, the provision of expertise to the media and government agencies, participation in several boards and committees, to field trips, as well as maintaining links with the local Greek community and contacts within Greece. A notable achievement in 2010 was the team's contribution to the 'A Day in Pompeii' exhibition, which successfully raised the profile of the University's Classics Programme in the wider community.
Marsden Grant for Rick Weiss
21 December 2011
Rick Weiss, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies, has received a three-year Marsden Grant for his research on Transforming Hinduism. He will examine important projects of Hindu religious innovation in nineteenth-century South India. These projects entailed re-imagining caste, gender, ritual practices, and sources of authority. His principal aim is to consider the impact of colonial and missionary forces on the ways that Hindus reconceived their traditions at the beginning of the modern era. By emphasising non-elite responses to colonialism, this research will challenge prevailing scholarly narratives of the development of contemporary Hinduism.AAANZ Conference
