"The Battle of Marathon 490BC"
in conjunction with the New Zealand Olympic Museum
Exactly 2,500 years ago the Athenians repulsed a Persian invasion force on the beaches of Marathon, 42km northeast of Athens. This was the first time any Greek army had defeated the Persians and the battle became a paradigm of victory, memory and conflict between east and west. Two 30 minute lectures will demonstrate the events and the significance of the battle for Greek and world history.
Matthew Trundle - The Battle of Marathon: As it Happened
Diana Burton - The Battle of Marathon: Reception in Art and Literature
Jeff Tatum - Concluding Remarks: The Significance of Marathon
Refreshments will be served throughout the evening.
