I am interested in how religious practices variously modulate social memory, prediction, and interaction. My subfield -- the cognitive science of religion -- sits at the borders of social neuroscience, philosophy, economics, and evolutionary biology.

Joseph's particular research interests are in:

  • evolutionary psychology of religion
  • philosophy of religion
  • religion and the emotions
  • ritual theory.

Joseph’s current research centres on the bio-functional aspects of religious cognition, evolutionary game theory, and emotional and ritual signalling.
