Bachelor of Science with Honours [BSc(Hons)]
On this page:
A BSc(Hons) is a programme of advanced study where students refine and apply the knowledge they have gained as an undergraduate. Students rapidly become part of the School's active research community and are encouraged to develop independent thinking.
An Honours degree is a stand alone qualification and equivalent to Part 1 of a Masters degree. It provides a stepping stone to the postgraduate research degrees such as Masters Part 2 and PhD.
Entry Requirements
To enter an Honours programme students require an undergraduate degree in Psychology or the equivalent for example the Graduate Diploma of Science. From 2011, students must have a B+ grade average in their four best 300 level PSYC courses, as well as an advanced research methods and statistics course.
Students must have completed PSYC 325, which is a prerequisite for the compulsory research methodology course PSYC 489. It provides the foundation required for postgraduate research.
Students applying from other universities will be assessed on a case by case basis.
Degree Structure
An Honours degree requires 120 points at 400 level. This usually consists of six 15 point courses and a 30 point research project. Three 15 point courses are taken in trimester one and trimester 2 and the research project runs for the whole year.

Note that up to 60 points from outside Psychology may also be taken with approval from the Graduate Coordinator and the relevant School. On completion of the degree students will be awarded a distinction of Honours for example, first class Honours, second class Honours first division etc.
Enrolment
Application for the honours programme must be made via the online enrolment system. International students must contact Victoria International to enrol.
The PSYC 489 Research Project is a compulsory requirement. Each trimester based course selected must have an alternative in case the initial course chosen is unavailable. Selection into courses is based upon availability. Where the demand is high for a course, selection will be based upon grade average.
There are two closing dates for Honours applications:
- 10 December, if a student intends to begin study in trimester 1 or Trimester 2 of the following year
- 1 June, if a student is enrolled in Trimester 1 at Victoria University. New students to the university will not be admitted into the Honours programme for Trimester 2.
