Research Interests
My research lies within the general area of social psychology. I have particular interests in discursive psychology and conversation analysis; feminist psychology, and sex/gender and sexuality. I have a long interest in the field of gender and language. In the recent past I have used a broadly discursive approach to data analysis. However, currently I am taking a more distinctively conversation analytic approach in my research. In 2007 I was a visiting Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of California at Los Angeles where I was involved in developing conversation analytic studies of everyday spoken New Zealand English. Since returning I have been developing and analysing a corpus of complaint calls to a dispute resolution service for complaints about electricity and gas.
Recent thesis topics that I have supervised include: talk-in-interaction in school playgrounds; gender and age categories in conversation; social psychological aspects of text messaging; talk about internet dating; discourses of fairness and equality in relationship property, and family communication with adolescents.
