Teaching Excellence

It only seems like yesterday that the School was celebrating the success of teaching and research awards. In truth this was last year, but once again we must celebrate another of our staff members' excellent work. Congratulations to Prof. Maryanne Garry who has received the VUW Excellence in Teaching Award for 2009.

Prof. Garry will be presenting her Professorial Lecture in 'Memory: Change we can believe in" hosted by Prof. Pat Walsh, Vice Chancellor. Prof. Garry will examine the causes and consequences of false memories.

The lecture will be held in Hunter Council Chamber, Level 2 Hunter Building - Kelburn Parade on Tuesday 3 November, 6pm. To register your interest please contact Information Desk 04 463 6700 or email rsvp@vuw.ac.nz with Garry in the subject line.

Personality Expert Dr Marc Wilson

Napier residents have a unique chance to gain insight into the study of personality when a Victoria expert in psychology gives a lecture there. A public lecture by Victoria School of Psychology Senior Lecturer Dr Marc Wilson will explore the links between personality and other characteristics, including dietary and drink preferences, political attitudes, psychopathology and
disordered personality."Your favourite beverage and musical genre says a lot about you," says Dr Wilson. "People might be surprised at the answers!"

"While the behaviour of people around us reflects a lot of influences, there's a core part of it that reflects personality, and most of us intuitively make use of this in our daily lives," he says.

The lecture is the second in a series of free public lectures organised by Victoria University's Faculty of Science in 2009 that will take some of the country's leading scientists to provincial centres around the country.

'Atamira - Maori in the City' COMPETITION

Under the auspicious of Te Puni Kokiri and the Deputy Dean of Equity (Science Faculty) Liz Richardson, five schools of the science faculty held a hands on interactive stall at Atamira Maori in the City.

For three long days the stall was surrounded by crowds wanting to make flubber, extract DNA, experience the neat things you can do with water and corn flour and figure out puzzles etc. Yes once again the PSYC team pulled out all the wiz bang tricks of psychology including the plastic brain model. It was a huge event where the team met lots of tamariki (children)and whanau (family).

As part of Atamira, PSYC also ran a competition with first prize a trip for two to Wellington on the 28th August 2009. If you were at Atamira here's your chance to go into the draw . Click on the link, answer a few questions and keep your fingers crossed. The winner will be a guest of the School for Study@VIC day. Here's your chance to look at a variety of disciplines, the university and Wellington city.

Check out some of the whanau who visited the stall.
