Research interests

Can we rely on what children tell us? When children talk to adults about things that have happened to them, how adults question and respond to them, and what children say is critical for decisions made in many settings - eg. police investigations of maltreatment, care and protection investigations, doctors visits, the courts or classrooms.

I research effective ways of helping children to describe their experiences and also what kinds of approaches might undermine children's contributions. I work with the NZ Police and Ministry for Vulnerable Children Oranga Tamarikito to train and evaluate practice when children are interviewed about maltreatment. I also look at how interviewing approaches can help (or hinder) adults memory for important events (eg. health interactions).
