His research interests range from ancient political thought (especially Plato and Cicero) to more general questions about power, democracy, and expertise. Current researchHistory of political thought (especially Ancient political thought). Xavier is especially interested in Plato’s political thought; he has been working on a book on Plato’s Statesman, looking specifically at how Plato understands political expertise in relationship to democracy. He is also interested in how the categories of Greek political thought were transformed by their appropriation by Roman thinkers, especially Cicero, in their efforts to adapt them to Roman reality. Other research areas: Power and the state, democratic theory and the challenge of non-democratic thought, knowledge and politics, methodological issues in political theory.
