Xiaoming Huang is Professor of International Relations. Professor Huang gained his PhD in international relations in 1993 from USC, and BA in international politics in 1983 and MA in international relations in 1986, both from Peking University. Before joining Victoria University in 1997, he had held various teaching and research positions at USC, Los Angeles; the East-West Center, Honolulu; the United Nations University, Tokyo; the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, Washington DC; the Center for International Studies/Pacific Council on International Policy, Los Angeles; University of Tampere, Finland; University of Trondheim, Norway; and University of Pittsburgh. Professor Huang is an Honourary Research Professor of the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Ever since early years in his academic career, Professor Huang has developed a key interest in the patterns of political and economic change in different institutional settings, and how we can understand them and describe them to people across critical boundaries, national, cultural or otherwise. This key interest has led to his research and publications on such topics as the institutional dynamics of China's grand transformation, the institutional competitiveness of East Asian development; cultural and institutional dynamics of modern political change; and ontological and epistemological issues in the study of international relations.

Professor Huang is Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre.

Current Research Projects

Professor Huang is currently working on a book-length project examining the institutional dynamics of modern development in China.
