The New Zealand Theatre Archive

Many of our theatrical records are lost forever .... let's save what
remain and keep them for the future.

The New Zealand Theatre Archive / Pūranga Whakaari o Aotearoa (NZTA) was formed to help preserve and promote interest in our theatre heritage.

New Zealand’s theatre archives are currently held in theatres, libraries, and other repositories all around the country. Some are well catalogued and carefully stored, others are at risk because those holding them lack the resources or the knowledge to care for them properly.

NZTA's mission is to identify all such archives, to list them, and encourage theatres and individuals to place them in secure repositories. The Theatre Archive was also established to support theatre groups in the management and preservation of their archives.

We aim to achieve these things through:

providing a database of New Zealand theatre archives

a training manual to help organisations care for their archives

offering advice to theatres and other arts organisations who hold theatre archives
