Welcome to the web pages of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs.

The Wellington Branch has around 250 members. It achieves the purpose of the NZIIA through the voluntary work of a committee comprising about a dozen people elected at the Annual General Meeting, which is held in May each year. The committee arranges a variety of the speakers from a variety of sources, including the United Nations, visiting foreign government representatives, non-Governmental Organisations, defence personnel, and academics. The Branch usually has two functions per month. Advice on forthcoming meetings is passed to members via email or by post. Meetings are normally held in lecture theatres at the Pipitea Campus of Victoria University of Wellington. We are grateful to the support that the University gives in fostering the aims of the branch and for the practical support.

Membership of the NZIIA includes subscription to the New Zealand International Review, a prestigious bi-monthly magazine which has numerous articles of contemporary international interest.

Non-members are invited to attend a meeting before making the decision to join the branch, with a donation/koha towards the cost of the meeting.

Should you wish to join the Wellington Branch, receive regular notices of meetings and copies of the New Zealand International Review, then please fill out the Membership form and forward with your cheque the Treasurer.

Your completed application form for membership can be handed a committee member at any of our meetings.

Study Groups

The Wellington Branch has developed the use of study groups, to give members more opportunities for participation. In 2001 the branch published Solomon Islands – Report of a Study Group, edited by Denis McLean, on the outbreak of violence and political turmoil there. Earlier, the Wellington Branch's Study Group report on East Timor attracted wide interest, particularly in the New Zealand Defence Force, as a background briefing for the New Zealand forces in East Timor.

There are still copies available of this report, which is indispensable reading for anyone concerned with the South Pacific. Please contact NZIIA to purchase a copy of the report, priced at $10 inc GST.

Email Notices

A large number of Wellington branch members are now receiving notices by email. Any other members who have email facilities and would like to receive branch notices and other relevant material electronically, please advise us of your email address when you pay your membership fee. If your email address has changed, it is important to let the Secretary know.
