For four years Victoria University’s Careers and Employment Office together with the alumni team has run a programme that connects working alumni with penultimate and final-year students for a six-month career mentoring partnership.
The purpose of the programme is to give students an opportunity to learn from an experienced alumni mentor – to enhance their employability and improve their employment outcomes once they graduate.
For mentors, the experience can bring many benefits from developing their own professional management skills to enjoying the satisfaction gained from ‘giving back’ to the next generation of Victoria alumni.
In 2017, the University is extending the benefits of the Wellington-based programme to alumni mentors in, and students from, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Viet Nam. Being an alumni mentor is, approximately, an 8-10 hour commitment to an online career mentoring partnership across April to October 2017.
Victoria University alumni in these countries are encouraged to RSVP for an upcoming briefing event to find out more about the pilot programme, or email the Alumni as Mentors programme team, to register their interest in becoming a mentor.
