Eighteen students are presenting a piece of theatre in late May that captures the essence of The Thistle Inn, Wellington’s oldest pub, on Mulgrave Street.
The performance is woven through the rooms in The Thistle Inn and explores Wellington’s history over 176 years.
There will be an array of colourful local characters including Katherine Mansfield and Te Rauparaha.
Stories of social history, change and the community that have evolved from this iconic pub will be investigated and celebrated.
The unique theatrical event is being run by Victoria University theatre lecturer Kerryn Palmer as a third year course in ‘site-specific theatre’.
She says site-specific performance is a way of allowing the past to resonate in the present.
“Through using a site or a place as a provocation, we awaken memories that have seeped into the walls of a site over the years, and add to those memories by creating our own.”
This is the second site-specific theatre course Kerryn Palmer has managed for Victoria University. In 2012 she directed Adrift—a performance linked to the shipwrecks and sea stories of the past and set on Seatoun Beach.
