Women, Architecture and Academia

A symposium focused on women and architecture will be hosted by Victoria University of Wellington this week.

The event is being organised by the Head of Victoria’s School of Architecture Professor Joanna Merwood-Salisbury and Professor Peggy Deamer, Assistant Dean of the School of Architecture at Yale University.

Called Feminism and Architecture: Women, Architecture and Academia, the symposium will take place on Thursday October 8 at Victoria University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design.

The symposium is structured around three sessions which take place throughout the day and cover topics such as how females are represented in the discipline and gender equity.

“The symposium was designed to question how women’s place in society and in the architectural profession is acknowledged in teaching material at universities. We have reached a point where a high proportion of architecture students and academics are females, but we are still not teaching in a way that recognises women’s experiences,” says Joanna.

“Attendees will be exposed to fresh ideas about how to teach architecture, including ways to make architectural education more accessible to women.”
