New appointments strengthen Law Faculty

Four recent academic appointments at Victoria University of Wellington’s Faculty of Law will further strengthen its expertise in commercial, public, property and resource management law.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Law Professor Mark Hickford says the appointments of Dr Matteo Solinas, Estair Van Wagner, Victoria Stace and Eddie Clark have added depth and breadth to the Faculty’s world-leading academic offering.

“All four bring specialist expertise and research knowledge that will bolster areas that the Faculty already excels at, while also bringing fresh new perspectives.”

Dr Matteo Solinas has recently arrived from the University of Glasgow’s School Law to take up senior lecturership in commercial law at Victoria.

Originally from Italy where he practiced as a commercial lawyer for seven years, Dr Solinas holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Universita’ Cattolica, a Master of Laws from the University of Warwick, a Master of Science from Bocconi and a PhD from the London School of Economics. In 2008, he worked as legal researcher at the Financial Markets Law Committee in London and is now a consultant expert for the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). He is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and an academic member of Lincoln's Inn, one of four Inns of Court in London to which barristers of England and Wales belong.

Lecturer in Property and Resource Management Law Estair Van Wagner has also moved to New Zealand to take up a position at Victoria.

Ms Van Wagner completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in political science, law, and environmental studies at the Osgoode Hall Law School and York University in Canada. She is nearing completion of her doctoral work, focusing on property and land use law, through Osgoode Hall where she served as adjunct faculty and a legal research instructor.

Company law and securities regulation specialist Victoria Stace joined the Faculty as a lecturer earlier in 2015, having previously worked for the University as an adjunct lecturer.

Holding a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from Victoria and a Master of Laws from Cambridge, Ms Stace’s background is in private practice, specialising in commercial law. She has been a partner and consultant at Chapman Tripp. She is the author of Securities Law in New Zealand(2010) and co-author of Financial Markets Conduct Regulation, A Practitioner's Guide (2014).

Another Victoria alumnus, Eddie Clark, has been appointed as a lecturer after working for a number of years as a commercial lawyer, specialising in regulatory and administrative law, and completing his LLM at the University of Toronto.

He is currently nearing completion of his doctoral work, focusing on administrative law, also at the University of Toronto. While in Toronto, he was on the adjunct faculty of both the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School, and worked as a researcher at the Law Commission of Ontario.
