Victoria celebrates capital city anniversary

How a bunch of Aussies ended up choosing New Zealand’s capital city will be explored as part of Victoria University’ s programme of public lectures, performances and exhibitions to mark the Capital 150th celebrations later this month.

“As New Zealand’s capital city university, these celebrations have significant meaning for Victoria University. Our evolution has been closely intertwined with that of our home city, and we will continue to grow together—cultivating intellectual, social and creative capital and facilitating innovation and sustainable economic growth.”

Victoria is one of more than 30 national institutions taking part in the Open House circuit, with a programme of public lectures, performances, and exhibitions at Old Government Buildings, the National Library and Parliament Buildings.

Professor Guilford says Victoria’s programme reflected the broad range of fields and leading research Victoria’s staff and students were involved in, all of which supported and contributed to Wellington’s identity.

“At Old Government Buildings, we’ll be celebrating Victoria as a capital city university, including poetry readings, history and drama. At the National Library we’ll be showcasing innovative projects, such as virtual reality technology.”

On the Sunday, Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music students will be performing at Parliament. For a full programme see www.victoria.ac.nz/wgtn-birthday
