Victoria alumnus wins Australian Lawyer of the Year

Justin Forsell may have just been singled out as In-House Lawyer of the Year at the recent Australasian Law Awards in Sydney, but the Victoria University alumnus can’t stop talking about the combined effort of his firm’s entire legal team.

“These awards are never for one individual, and this award particularly is testament to the fantastic work of the legal team,” he says.

Justin, of Ngati Porou, was one of the four individuals to win at the black tie event last month, with the other 26 awards going to firms from both sides of the Tasman.

“It’s a great privilege to win, as the Australasian Law Awards always attract a very strong field,” he says.

Justin runs the legal and security department at the Australian broadband network company nbn, where he has been working since 2010. His role covers all major transactions, dispute management and litigation, legal analysis, risk and advice work, as well as supporting corporate governance.

Prior to nbn, Justin worked for Hutchison Telecom in Hong Kong, British Telecom in Tokyo and London, and Vodafone Australia in Sydney.

It’s been 25 years since he graduated from law school at Victoria, but he still remembers Robert (Bob) Dugan lecturing company law. “I learned how critical the value of ‘no BS’ creativity is in solving business issues through the law. That lesson has helped me many times in my career,” he says.
