Excellence recognised by world-renowned institute

Victoria University of Wellington’s Professor Peter Smith has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) for his research on multiple antennas which are being deployed in commercial mobile phone systems.

Professor Smith from the School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of seven people in New Zealand to have received the honour, three of whom come from Victoria University.

He joins Dr Mansoor Shafi (1993 Fellow) and Professor Bastiaan Kleijn (1999 Fellow) from the School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Associate Dean (Research and Innovation) Professor Mengjie Zhang from the Faculty of Engineering says Peter’s achievement is excellent news for the University.

"This recognises Peter's expertise in wireless communications and will allow Victoria to continue to play a leadership role in this area in New Zealand and internationally. This is also a good example of interdisciplinary research in engineering, science and industry that the Faculty will continue to support."

The honour of IEEE Fellow is awarded to a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest, including engineering, science and technology. Professor Smith was nominated by Dr Shafi and was supported by the IEEE New Zealand South Section.

“This is a great honour and it is particularly satisfying to be recognised for contributions to engineering given that my background is in statistics and pure mathematics,” says Professor Smith. “Mansoor Shafi has long recognised that people in all areas can make useful contributions in wireless communications and it is thanks to him that I was introduced to this research.”

Dr Peter Donelan, Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, says being named Fellow is timely recognition of Professor Smith’s work.

“His work in applying statistical techniques in the design and implementation of wireless networks is something that we take for granted these days, and another reminder that so much of our modern technology is underpinned by mathematics. It’s very much part of the Victoria environment to foster multidisciplinary research.”

The IEEE, with more than 400,000 members in 160 countries, is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence.
