Victoria’s Queens Birthday Honours recipients

Victoria University of Wellington congratulates staff, former staff, alumni and friends who have been recognised in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Among the honours recipients is current staff member Emeritus Professor David Bibby, who has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to science and education over the past 40 years. He was Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Science, Engineering and Architecture and Design at Victoria from 2003 to 2013 and is currently Acting Head of the School of Economics and Finance.

Victoria alumna were among the women receiving the highest acknowledgement on the Honours list.

Bronwen Scott, who has a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria, was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and the arts. Along with being Finance Director and Chairperson of the Holdsworth Group, a successful Gisborne-based industrial technology company, she has made a significant contribution to the cultural and artistic life of Gisborne. She is a current board member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Therese Walsh, a Victoria accounting graduate, has also become a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her role in sports administration. She headed New Zealand’s 2015 Cricket World Cup campaign and has held prominent roles in the New Zealand Rugby Union, including as Chief Financial Officer. She was General Manager Corporate Services and Chief Operating Officer for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Another honours recipient is David Kernohan, who has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to architecture. Mr Kernohan was an Associate Professor who taught architecture, urban design, building heritage and conservation at Victoria for more than 22 years. He also held the role of Dean of the School of Architecture. Mr Kernohan was appointed to the Building Industry Authority to investigate leaky homes, with his findings forming a part of the report which became a critical component of a subsequent review of New Zealand’s Building Act.
