Show goes on for new Victoria graduates

Victoria University of Wellington Chancellor Sir Neville Jordan applauds the resilience of new graduates and their family and friends who, despite flooding across the wider Wellington region causing widespread disruption, were still able to celebrate this week.

Only 16 graduates, out of 565 from Victoria Business School, were unable to make it into Wellington to cross the stage yesterday. Hundreds of staff volunteers, musicians from Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music and academics also played their part in ensuring the ceremonies went ahead for the thousands of graduates and their families.

“Victoria’s community of staff, students and alumni all pulled together this week and I am immensely proud to be part of such a supportive university.

“Despite the challenging weather conditions, we held a fantastic celebration for our newest graduates,” says Sir Neville. “It was a pleasure to recognise the hard work of so many who will go on to make an important contribution to New Zealand and the world.”

With road closures and traffic issues in the Wellington region yesterday, a number of halls of residence opened their doors to about 40 students and academics who were unable to make it home.

The wild weather also forced the cancellation of both Victoria University graduation parades, due to march throughout the central city on both Tuesday and Thursday. It’s believed to be the first time in a decade that Victoria has cancelled both parades during the May celebrations.

“We know that our parades are a highlight of Graduation Week and it is disappointing for staff, students and the whole of Wellington when we cancel it.”

The University will contact those who were unable to attend their ceremonies and has offered access to academic dress, free of charge, for photos.
