Graduation marks Victoria students’ achievements

Nearly 2200 students will this week cross the stage to mark the culmination of their studies at Victoria University of Wellington.

Graduation will be spread over six ceremonies, with a total of 2446 qualifications being awarded to 2191 graduands, including 41 who are graduating with a PhD.

Victoria University Chancellor Sir Neville Jordan says graduation is a chance for students to celebrate their achievements after years of hard work studying for their qualification.

“A degree from Victoria University is no easy feat—anyone graduating should not lose sight of the value and significance of their accomplishment. It’s also a time to revel in the pride that their family, friends and teachers all feel in what they’ve achieved.

Sir Neville says a particular pride will be felt by graduates who are the first in their family to receive a university degree and by those who have supported them.

“In the years our graduates have spent studying at Victoria, students who started here just out of school have matured into knowledgeable and confident adults. Our adult learners, too, have expanded their outlook on the world and have shown themselves capable of achieving something their earlier circumstances might not have allowed.

“As alumni of New Zealand’s globally ranked capital city university, I know that this week’s cohort of Victoria graduates will go on to make an important contribution to New Zealand and the world, and I wish each of them every success in their future endeavours,” says Sir Neville.

He says the formal processions of staff and students through the streets of Wellington, which will be held from 12 noon on Tuesday and Thursday, are a chance for the wider community to take part in the special occasion.

"The shared acknowledgement of the graduands’ success is a real highlight for our students and we encourage the public to come and celebrate with us at the parades.”
