Site purchase supports Victoria's future growth

A decision to purchase the Gordon Wilson building and site at 314 The Terrace from Housing New Zealand supports future growth plans for Victoria University says Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford.

Victoria has announced that it will buy the Gordon Wilson property, which spans the slope between The Terrace and the University’s Kelburn Campus, while Housing New Zealand will retain and redevelop the neighbouring McLean building and site.

Professor Guilford said the acquisition of the Gordon Wilson site would enable to University to support its strategic goal of being more connected to the city of Wellington.

“The purchase is an exciting step for the University as we start to develop long-term capital plans that support our aspirations to double the size of Victoria within the next 20 to 30 years.

“Buying this site on The Terrace is an important part of our future development plans and we will be exploring our options for using it. We are conscious, for instance, that the site has the potential to be a new front door to our Kelburn Campus,” says Professor Guilford.

Victoria University recently announced two significant capital development projects—an extension to Rutherford House on the Pipitea Campus and the construction of a new building to house the biological sciences on the Kelburn Campus.
