Victoria University of Wellington’s Campus Hub building has been recognised with a 2013 Wellington Architecture Award.

In addition to an award in the category of education, presented by the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), the Hub also received the Resene Colour Award and was commended for its visual richness and interest.

The Hub, located at the heart of the University’s Kelburn Campus, is the cornerstone of a six-year project which includes the refurbishment of the Library and Tim Beaglehole Courtyard.

An integral part of the Hub is the reconfigured Kelburn Library which opens into and actively engages with the new Hub.

Morten Gjerde, NZIA Wellington Branch Convenor and a Senior Lecturer at Victoria’s School of Architecture, says the reading room of the Library will become recognised as one of the best indoor spaces in Wellington, perhaps in all of New Zealand.

“The generosity of space, controlled day-lighting and beautiful detailing will see this space attracting a lot of attention from architects and members of the public alike. The students have a truly inspiring space to work in,” he says.

Mr Gjerde says the architectural finishes and detailing are superb in quality—something that is unexpected for a project of this scale and use.

Professor Pat Walsh, Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University, says the Hub has completely transformed the Kelburn Campus and is an outstanding example of the University’s commitment to ensuring students have a first-rate experience at Victoria.

“It has been a major part of our efforts in recent years to offer students a world-class student experience, and it is very pleasing to see students filling this space, studying, socialising and enjoying this superb new building.”

The architectural firms involved in the project were Athfield Architects and Architectus. The project has been a partnership between Victoria University of Wellington, the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association (VUWSA) and the VUWSA Trust, with students involved in planning and design.
