Creative Writing is available as a minor. You cannot major in Creative Writing but you can credit our undergraduate CREW workshops towards a Bachelor of Arts or Graduate Diploma in Arts, or another degree by arrangement with the relevant Faculty. One CREW course may be included in an English Literature major with the approval of the Head of School. CREW 353 Writing for Theatre may be included in a Theatre major with the approval of the Head of School. The subject requirements for a BA minor are at least 60 points selected from CREW 200–399, including at least 20 points at 300-level. You can also take CREW workshops independently. Contact your Home Faculty or Student Recruitment for more information.
Our 200-level workshops are 20-point undergraduate courses. The formal prerequisite for these is 40 points and an appropriate standard in written composition.
We also offer 300-level workshops. These workshops are 20 point undergraduate courses. The formal prerequisite for these is 40 points and an appropriate standard in written composition.
Workshops are limited to 12 students and the quality of the writing sample which accompanies applications is central to the selection process.
Undergraduate CREW workshops normally consist of 12 three-hour meetings over one trimester. Participants are assessed by a folio of writing submitted immediately after the final workshop. Folios are examined on a pass/fail basis with written reports provided by the workshop convenor and one external reader.
Our courses are not a classroom version of a writing manual: we do not teach a specific set of predetermined skills. Our aim is to develop the imaginative capacity and individual literary skills of emerging writers in a stimulating workshop environment.
100% attendance at workshops is expected.
CREW workshops are offered in specific trimesters each year, subject to the availability of course convenors. Visit the links below for course details and timing.
FEES: please note that Tuition Fees do not include any Levies. To calculate your total fees, click on the Fees Calculator icon at the individual CREW workshop links below.
