How to Apply

We welcome enquiries about our creative writing (CREW) courses from international students. However, international applications for admission must be made through Victoria International:

International applications should be made on paper by the relevant application closing date. Victoria International can also advise about visa requirements and financial matters.

Please note the following exceptions:

  • Australian citizens and residents are considered domestic students for admission and fees purposes.
  • Applicants who have graduated from Victoria University within the last two years do not need to re-apply for admission through Victoria International.
  • International applicants to PhD programmes at Victoria are charged domestic fees and should apply through the Faculty of Graduate Research.

About Distance Teaching

Our CREW courses are not available as a form of distance learning. The regular workshop meetings are a crucial part of developing students' creative writing ability. Workshop attendance is compulsory.

Undergraduate Applicants

Our undergraduate CREW courses are graded Pass/Fail only, with detailed feedback on students' folios provided in written reports. Undergraduate exchange students should confirm with their home university that they can credit ungraded courses to their degree.

PhD Applicants

Prospective international PhD applicants should also read the Postgraduate – PhD page of our website, or contact us to have this information posted to you.

After making initial enquiries about your project with our PhD programme coordinator, Bill Manhire, you can contact Victoria International for advice on the application process, enrolment, visa requirements and financial matters. However, your application should be lodged through the Faculty of Graduate Research, using their downloadable 'Application for PhD admission and Victoria scholarships' form.

International PhD students at Victoria are charged domestic fees.  Prospective scholarships applicants should also read ‘About Victoria University scholarships’ and our Scholarships and Prizes page.

PhD students do not need to live in Wellington to take the PhD, but are expected to be on campus for the six-weekly meetings of the PhD group, and for regular meetings with supervisors.

About Scholarships

Scholarships information for international applicants

Search the Scholarships database. You can refine your search by selecting one or more of the following options in the drop-down boxes:

Level - graduate or postgraduate
Subject area – Humanities and Social Sciences
Personal characteristics – International students

If you apply successfully for a Victoria Master’s (by thesis) Scholarship, international students, other than those from Australia, will be liable to pay the difference between the full international student fee and the domestic fee.

The Victoria PhD Scholarship is open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol for a PhD.
