About
William Brandt is a 1998 graduate of the MA in Creative Writing from Victoria University of Wellington. He won the Adam Prize for best folio that year, and his short fiction collection Alpha Male won the Montana Award for Best First Book. It was published in New Zealand and the UK.
His short fiction has been translated into French and German and appears in numerous journals and anthologies, including Sport, The Penguin Book of Contemporary New Zealand Short Stories and The Flamingo Anthology of New Zealand Short Stories. His novel, The Book of the Film of the Story of My Life, has been translated into Italian and has been published in New Zealand, the UK and the United States. The New Zealand Herald named it in 2010 as one of the best ten New Zealand books of the decade. His play, Verbatim, appeared in the Edinburgh festival in 1994, and has been performed almost continuously around the country ever since.
William has worked as a film and television actor, as a producer, script reader and editor, a film and television writer, and is currently working on a screenplay. He continues to write short fiction. He previously taught CREW 254 from 2004 to 2006, and again from 2013 to the present day. He has served as a supervisor and external reader for the IIML MA programme, and in 2022 he co-convened the MA Page workshop. As a founding member of the Write Where You Are Trust, he teaches creative writing at Arohata and Rimutaka Prisons.
