LLC Orientation
- For language courses, we organise LLC Orientation for tutorial groups at the start of term, usually in class time. Tailored to the course, these are short overview tours/ hands-on computer classes, and aim to set you up to use the centre effectively.
- We talk about the specialist role of the LLC, successful language learning strategies, and introduce recommended multimedia resources
- Workshops are held from time to time
- LLC staff are happy to show people around the Centre at all times
Language Learning Advice
- LLC staff offer informal advice on successful language learning strategies, resource recommendations, learning pathways, etc.
- Language Learning Hot Tips can be downloaded (at left), and are available for pickup near the LLC counter (Independent Learning, Grammar, Vocabulary, Writing, Speaking, Reading, Listening, and a Journal). Also, the Self Access Centre has numerous books on Independent Learning.
- Language Advisory Sessions for enrolled VUW students can also be arranged with a formal Language Advisor. Ask about this service at the LLC Counter.
Language Buddies
- Language Buddies are informal exchanges between two native speakers of different languages, e.g. a native Chinese speaker learning English and an English speaker learning Chinese
- Talking to a native speaker of a language has numerous benefits: you can get feedback on your pronunciation, an insight into their culture, learn colloquial phrases, make a new friend .....
- Apply early each academic year after 1 March: Application Forms are available at the LLC. Also you can download/email the 2012 Application form, or register your interest through myVictoria 'Groups'. In the Group Index, find 'Language Buddies'. Join up to interact with a wider network of language learners, share learning strategies, files, links and make new friends.
- Every effort is made to match language buddies, although this is not always possible for all languages
- Gains points towards the Victoria Plus Award and the Victoria International Leadership Programme. See here for other ways to get involved and enhance your Victoria degree.
- The Victoria International Buddy Programme is similar to LLC Language Buddies but without the focus of a language exchange
Computer Services
- LLC computers for independent learning are located in the Multimedia Zone. Priority use is for language
learning software.
- The LLC has specialist authoring software for voice recording and video recording, and a comprehensive selection of language
learning software (see on the web page for each language)
- From all VUW PCs (including at the LLC), students can do word processing and spellchecking in English and other languages, use the Internet, Blackboard, and access the LLC Server for digitised course materials.
- Printing/internet costs are automatically debited from your Computing Account.
Copying
- Audio materials of set texts (only) can be copied by students of VUW language courses. Most are digitised on the Q Drive (accessed from any VUW PC).
- Other materials produced by VUW teaching staff can usually
be copied
- Authorised copies made are for home-use
- Students need to supply their own blank audio cds, memory stick, etc.
- No other copying is permitted
- A limited photocopying service is available

Activate YOUR language learning!
LLC staff urge you to study at the LLC in your own time, apart from simply attending the lectures and audiovisual classes for your course.
You'll reap the benefits and become a more successful language learner.
Decide on your goals and set up your own independent learning programme at the centre. Think about your learning style, and work at your own pace. The LLC has heaps of multimedia resources to let you really immerse yourself in the language and culture. Ask LLC staff too.
Get motivated! Make a habit of studying at the LLC often, even between lectures.
Turn that C into an A!

Language Buddies
In my two years at VUW I've had 2 language buddies. Firstly I was paired up with Tiare from Tahiti. We met at the LLC and occasionally at a café to chat in either French or English. Then my buddy was María from Spain and we met up in a café in town twice a week, alternating speaking in English and Spanish.
The LLC's Language Buddy programme has been ideal for both of us because we've helped each other with our language skills whilst having fun and speaking about topics that actually interest us. We've learnt new vocabulary and expressions, and I've become more confident in my Spanish tutorials. I'm very grateful to María for teaching me that it’s not a crime to make a mistake when you're learning a language;
the real crime is to be too embarrassed to give it a go!

I used the LLC a lot to learn Spanish as a beginner. I like learning new languages because it gives me new opportunities to communicate with non-English speakers. It also helps in my study towards a Master of International Relations.
The LLC is an awesome resource at Vic. I don't think I would have done as well as I have without it!
