Projects

In-house Software Development

Computer software designed for students of VUW language courses is under constant development.

In-house software development is course-oriented: you come with your own material (Word documents, tapes, videos, etc...) that Edith converts into digital material to be embedded into interactive language applications.
Find out with Edith how to transfer a simple Word document into a fully multimedia set of exercises with immediate feedback and scores.
You will discuss the objectives and pedagogy behind your project, and Edith will guide you through the process of designing your own exciting web-based course material, which can then be used in conjunction with Blackboard.

CALL Interest Group

A CALL interest Group began in mid 2007 and used to meet regularly to evaluate how language teaching and learning can benefit from educational technologies. Teachers from the 4 language schools at Victoria participated and shared ideas. A new group will re-united in 2008.

A CALL Space is set up on Blackboard for teachers to have hands-on practice using tools such as blogs, podcasts, and discussion forums, and to help them decide if these tools are effective for their course.

The CALL group is part of a wider project to build a Community of Practice of Foreign Language Teachers with a common purpose, and innovate through the generation of ideas, collaboration and social support. Anyone is invited to participate.

Language Technology

During term time, a Computer Classroom is open to staff one hour a week (tba) so that teachers can challenge their computer skills for teaching purposes, or have a training session. Please contact Edith in advance to do so.
Hands-on CALL training sessions include:

  • Managing your audiovisual class using Sony Soloist/Virtuoso (opening files, pairing students, monitoring, recording pairs, etc...)
  • Creating and editing audio on your PC with Audacity
  • Making effective PowerPoint presentations for your language classes - including inserting audio and video and putting it on a web page
  • Creating interactive exercises with HotPotatoes - (introduction)

With teachers' expressions of interest, more advanced topics will be covered, e.g. Computer Mediated Communication tools (Chats, Discussion Forums, Blogs), The Internet as a learning tool (creating task sheets), Copyright and the Internet, Capturing video and audio from the web, etc.

Sarah Silver and James McNamara

"We used an old LLC classroom for our AV classes a couple of years ago. Now we're using an LLC computer classroom and it's vital for our 3rd year German studies.

We can talk to each other using headphones. And the tutor can easily play foreign videos and DVDs on the huge classroom screen or on our individual computers.

Listening to sound or video is so much easier because there is no rewinding of tapes needed".
