Courses
The second year of the LLB degree comprises five 200-level law courses.
- LAWS 211 The Law of Contract
- LAWS 212 The Law of Torts
- LAWS 213 Public Law
- LAWS 214 Criminal Law
- LAWS 297 Legal Research and Writing
Students must:
- Enrol in LAWS 297 when enrolling in second-year law for the first time
- List alternative course and streams on your application for second-year law
- Transferring students must provide an Official Academic Transcript to the Enrolments Office by 10 January or risk forfeiting their space.
Workload
LAWS 297 and three courses chosen from LAWS 211, 212, 213 and 214 are an advisable law workload for one year. You might add one other non-law course.
LAWS 297 is delivered through intensive seminars and through individual research. There is significant workload in the first trimester so you are advised to plan your workload accordingly.
Alternative Courses and Streams
If you are applying for any 200-level LAWS courses, you must include alternative streams and courses as part of your online enrolment application.
Reasons
Once students have met the entrance criteria and are accepted to second-year Law, they may be accepted to any of the 200-level LAWS courses. The second-year Law courses can be completed in any order.
If your preferred stream is full once you are reached in the selection process (according to your GPA), you can instead be enrolled into an alternative stream. Thus returning 200-level students may also be moved to a different stream if they are applying for a more popular stream and do not indicate that they are unable to enrol in the other stream. The Law Faculty aims to spread enrolments evenly across the eight streams.
What to do
As part of the online enrolment process
-
Select the non-law courses and the law stream/s that you want to be considered for first. These are your first preferences. Select Add To Course List. If you only wish to enrol into two second-year Law courses, then only apply for two second-year Law courses.
-
Select the alternative streams that you can do if your preferred stream is full. Select Add as Alternative Course. Also add any non-law courses that you want to and can do if you are not accepted into your second-year Law courses.
For example: stream one of LAWS 211 is your preferred stream; you cannot enrol in stream two due to work commitments; if you are not accepted to stream one of LAWS 211, you would like to be enrolled into stream two of LAWS 213 (first preference) or PHIL 223 (second preference) or stream one or LAWS 212 (third preference) etc. There are eight possible second-year Law streams. If you are applying for two second-year Law courses, you will have two preferred streams and should list the remaining six streams. Do not list streams that you cannot do (see note 5).
-
Once you have selected all of your alternative streams and courses, use the buttons on the right to rank your options. 1 is your first alternative preference.
-
Continue and submit the online enrolment application.
-
If there is a reason that you cannot enrol in any particular stream, email the reason to address with the subject line "200-level stream preference". Examples could be work, childcare or family commitments, or medical considerations. Email if you have not selected any alternative preferences, to provide a reason. You do not need to email about previously completed courses or timetable clashes.
-
The second-year Law courses are full year (trimesters one and two). Once accepted into a stream, you will remain in that stream for the full year. Applications to change streams at mid-year will only be permitted under exceptional circumstances.* To apply to change streams, email your request and reason to address with the subject line "mid-year stream change".
