In a trial to commemorate its 800th year, Magna Carta is charged with being ’irrelevant and obsolete’. Join the gallery to see members of the local legal community argue about the continuing significance of this historic document. 

Presiding Judge: Hon Justice William Young, Judge of the Supreme Court.

Prosecution: Jack Hodder QC, barrister, and Mihiata Pirini, senior legal and policy adviser, Law Commission.

Defence: Liesle Theron, partner, Meredith Connell, and Pita Roycroft, student, Victoria University of Wellington.

This event is part of the New Zealand Centre for Public Law’s Landmarks series, which commemorates a number of significant legal anniversaries: The New Zealand Bill of Rights Act (25 years in September 2015); the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 (40 years in October 2015) and Entick v Carrington (250 years in November 2015).
