“Language affects almost everything we do, and studying linguistics reminds me to appreciate its complexity and power.”
I am currently in my final year of a BA(Hons) in Linguistics. I have always been interested in learning languages. Studying Linguistics has helped me to understand both the formal, structural aspect of language and social issues associated with it, such as language planning and discrimination.
During my degree, I took advantage of Vic OE and studied abroad in Austin, Texas. I had many opportunities in Austin, and worked in a lab studying American Sign Language acquisition. When I returned to New Zealand, I continued my studies in Linguistics and also began learning NZSL. Last summer I received a scholarship to complete a project at the Australian National University, where I worked in the linguistics area of the Research School of Pacific and Asia Studies. When I finish my degree I plan to return to Austin and learn American Sign Language, while deciding what my next step will be. Eventually, I would like to return to study to become a sign language interpreter.
