Professor Bauer teaches theoretical and descriptive linguistics.

Professor Bauer is currently also Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Research.

Laurie Bauer has two main areas of research interest. Firstly, he is interested in morphology, in particular in word-formation (both derivation and compounding). This interest is reflected in a number of major publications: The Grammar of Nominal Compounding (Odense: Odense University Press, 1978), English Word-formation (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1983), Introducing Linguistic Morphology (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1988, 2nd ed. 2003), Morphological Productivity (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2001).

His second major research area is the description of international varieties of English, with particular reference to the English spoken in New Zealand. He is the author of the chapter in the Cambridge History of the English Language concerning the development of English in New Zealand, and has published many articles on the phonetics, phonology and grammar of New Zealand English and is the author of An Introduction to International Varieties of English (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2002).

Apart from these two major areas, he has interests in articulatory phonetics, the description of the Germanic languages, dependency grammars and change in current English.
