Peter supervises MA and PhD research in the areas of learner autonomy and learning strategies, language testing and assessment, and vocabulary acquisition. Peter currently teaches on the BEdTESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics/TESOL programmes. He has extensive teaching and teacher training experience in New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Mainland China.

Peter is also an Adjunct Research Fellow at the National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education, Beijing, China. He was a recipient of the LANCOO-BFSU Foreign Language Education Research Fellowship, July to Sept 2011, National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education, China. Peter was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, March to June 2014.

Peter was the recipient of the 2004 Thomson Heinle Distinguished Research Award from TESOL. He was co-editor of Asian Journal of English Language Teaching (2006-2010). Peter was Co-President (with Catherine Elder, 2013-2014) of the Association for Language Testing and Assessment of Australia and New Zealand (ALTAANZ).
