Welcome from the Acting Head of the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies.
A warm welcome to the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (LALS). Staff and students in LALS are actively engaged in teaching and research in the areas of language structure, language teaching and learning, and language use.
Our teaching programmes include undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Graduate Certificate in TESOL, New Zealand Sign Language, and Writing (Academic and Professional). In addition, LALS houses the English Language Institute, which for over 50 years has provided programmes in English Proficiency for non-native speakers of English.
Staff and student research contributes to our strong international research profile. LALS is home to a number of research projects and units, including the Deaf Studies Research Unit, and the New Zealand Dictionary Centre. The international flavour of the School is reflected in its staffing and in the presence of almost 50 PhD students from 13 different countries.
Students in the School are encouraged to use the Language Learning Centre, which offers a multimedia resource collection and support services for languages, and a welcoming study environment.
LALS also administers the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in Wellington.
