About IPNZ

The Innocence Project New Zealand (IPNZ) is a joint venture between Victoria University of Wellington and University of Otago. The IPNZ is a non-profit group of scientists, writers and lawyers aimed at investigating possible cases of wrongful conviction in the New Zealand legal system. The IPNZ is a member of the international umbrella organization, known as the Innocence Network. The Innocence Network is comprised of groups from USA, Canada, Britain and Australia who are dedicated to providing pro bono legal and investigative services to individuals seeking to prove innocence of crimes for which they have been convicted and working to redress the causes of wrongful convictions.

What kinds of cases does the IPNZ take on?

IPNZ will consider any case where an innocent person has been tried, convicted, and appealed that conviction. IPNZ does not consider:

  1. Cases that have not been appealed or that are awaiting an appeal decision.
  2. Cases where a person was convicted on evidence that is solely on a matter of consent.
  3. Cases in which the defendant admits to a lesser charge or is seeking a reduction in sentence.

How can you assist the IPNZ?

We seek voluntary assistance from Victoria University students who would like to help investigate the cases that are registered with the IPNZ. If you are interested in helping the IPNZ, please click here.
