All international students must have current and appropriate medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. Insurance must comply with the guidelines set out in the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (The Code).
Most international students are not entitled to publicly-funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may have to pay the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available from the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website
Medical treatment can be very expensive, especially if you have to go to hospital or return home, so you must have insurance to cover it. You also need to be insured against loss or theft of your personal property, unexpected travel delays, and unintentional damage you cause to someone else's property.
Victoria University's preferred insurance for our international students is Studentsafe University.
Studentsafe University is specially designed for international students studying in New Zealand, and meets all the requirements of The Code at a competitive price.
All international students who enrol at Victoria University of Wellington are automatically signed up for the Studentsafe University policy.
Students who have an alternative medical and travel insurance must submit the alternative policy to Victoria International for review to check that it meets the The Code requirements. If the policy does not meet The Code requirements then you will be required to purchase StudentSafe University or another policy that does.
Visit our Frequently Asked Questions on insurance to find out about the alternative policy assessment process.
Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs.
