The role and experience of women chief executives in the National Health Service in England: gendered stories of leadership in difficult times’.
During her two year secondment to HSRC Judith Smith successfully submitted her PhD thesis. This research maps and analyses the demography of the chief executive population in the National Health Service (NHS) in England.  Two national surveys carried out revealed that the primary care/purchaser chief executive population differed significantly from that of hospitals in relation to: gender; age; and career history.  The second stage of research focused on the role and experience of women chief executives, and a narrative analysis revealed six dilemmas or anxieties common to the women’s presentation of stories of self and career.
