VILP - Te Pūao Manukura

Our world is a changing place - a place where information and communication knows no borders; where local events have global ramifications; where the welfare and security of humanity depends upon responsible action, both individual and communal.

This dynamic environment requires us to be equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to address the challenges of tomorrow.

To meet this need, Victoria University of Wellington launched the Victoria International Leadership Programme Te Pūao Manukura (VILP) in October 2008 - the first programme of its kind among New Zealand universities.

What is the Victoria International Leadership Programme?

The Victoria International Leadership Programme (VILP) is an academically-oriented extra-curricular programme of seminars, speaker events and experiential activities relevant to the themes of :

  • international leadership
  • cross-cultural communication
  • global connectedness, and
  • sustainability.

The need for our students to become more cross-culturally competent and globally aware becomes ever more pressing if they are to thrive in the global knowledge economy and to become active global citizens.  VILP is designed to address this need.

For students, the programme will enhance their leadership skills, international knowledge and cultural awareness, as well as encourage interaction between international and domestic students, and across the various university faculties.

VILP takes advantage of the university's Wellington location - in the political centre and cultural capital of New Zealand - and links Victoria University of Wellington with a wide range of stakeholders at a local, national and global level.

It also benefits from synergistic collaboration with partners such as:

as well as such VUW entities, to name a few, as

  • the Centre for Applied Cross-Cultural Research (CACR), and
  • the Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS).

As well as helping develop valuable skills of interest to employers around the world, the programme will enable students to better understand and debate pressing global issues such as economic interdependence, poverty and human security.
