Alastair Espie’s father is a lawyer but he was “no more informed than anyone else who watches Boston Legal” when he decided to enrol in a law degree.

Alastair—an Aucklander who chose Victoria after attending the Study at Vic Open Day—knew he wanted to complete a BA but decided he might as well add Law courses to see what it was like.

“I really enjoyed it so carried on. Now, I’m interested in finding a career that allows me to focus on both the legal profession and International Relations, which is my BA major.”

On a typical day, Alastair splits his time between the Law School in downtown Wellington and the Kelburn Campus. When he’s not in class, you’ll find him hanging out with friends in the common room or working in the library.

He’s a big fan of living in the capital. “There’s always something going on and any time stuff is happening the city really seems to buzz. Everything’s so close and easy to get to—the old issues I had with commuting to and from school in Auckland are a distant memory.”

Being able to study in New Zealand’s government and political heart also helped clinch the decision in Wellington’s favour.

“Victoria offers an experience you can only get at a university located in the capital city. The interaction we have with politicians, public servants and other people of influence is quite incredible and really adds another dimension to our courses.”

A lecturer that has left a significant impression on Alastair is Professor Graeme Austin who taught him the law of torts. “I found his passion and imaginative way of relating the subject matter especially engaging. His teaching has left me enthusiastic about this area of law and has ensured it will be something I look to focus my study on in years to come.”

Alastair strongly recommends living in a hall of residence.

“I chose Weir House because of its facilities, location and reputation. The best thing about my time there, without a doubt, was the fantastic people and making some great friends. Lasagne night wasn’t bad either!”

Alastair’s tip for first year students is to take advantage of the “incredible array” of opportunities at Victoria. It’s advice he has followed himself.

Alastair competed in mooting and negotiation competitions within the Law School and that led to him joining the youth arm of the United Nations Association of New Zealand (UN Youth), an activity that has taken him to events in New Zealand and overseas.
