Certificate of University Preparation

The Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) is a programme for domestic students (New Zealand citizens or permanent residents) who do not gain university entrance at Year 13 or who have left school without formal qualifications and wish to return to study. The programme is taught full-time over one trimester (or part-time over two trimesters) and aims to prepare students for successful degree-level study.

The CUP is offered each trimester, i.e. February, July, and November. School-leavers wishing to be accepted into the CUP will normally have completed Year 13 or its equivalent. Non-school-leavers will need to produce evidence that they have a suitable background and will benefit from enrolling in the programme.

Tohu Māoritanga

The Tohu Māoritanga provides a foundation in three areas: Māori language, culture and society, and tikanga (customs and practice).

It can be completed in one year if your competency in te reo is equivalent to 14 NCEA Level 2 credits or Sixth Form-level Te Reo Māori - otherwise it may take two years.

The Tohu Māoritanga is designed as an introduction to university-level study in the area of Māori Studies. A university entrance qualification is not required, as long as you are aged 16 years or over. So, if you left school before doing exams, or have been away from formal classes and are unsure if you can handle studying again, the Tohu Māoritanga offers you the opportunity to try out university study.

The Tohu Māoritanga can be studied on its own as a valuable introduction to taha Māori, or, when completed, can give you up to 90 points towards a Bachelor of Arts degree at Victoria if you wish to pursue further studies.
