Explanation of Grades

The following grades appear on result notifications and/or student histories:

Standard Pass/Fail Grades

Grade Percentage Range Midpoint Meaning
A+ 85% - 100% 92.5 Excellent performance in all respects
A 80% - 84% 82 Excellent performance in almost all respects
A- 75% - 79% 77 Very good, some aspects excellent but others not
B+ 70% - 74% 72 Very good, some aspects excellent but others not
B 65% - 69% 67 Good performance overall
B- 60% - 64% 62 Good performance overall
C+ 55% - 59% 57 Work satisfactory overall, strengths outweigh weaknesses
C 50% - 54% 52 Work satisfactory overall, strengths outweigh weaknesses
D 40% - 49% 45 Poor performance overall, weaknesses outweigh strengths
E 0 - 39% 20 Well below the standard required

Other Pass Grades

Grade Meaning
H Pass (for some Practicum courses)
M Overall Pass with Merit (used only for teacher education courses)
P Overall Pass (for a course classified as Pass/Fail)

Other Fail Grades

Grade Percentage range / Meaning
F Fail (for a Pass/Fail course; also used for an unsuccessful special pass application)
K Fail due to not satisfying mandatory course requirements, even though the student’s course mark reached the level specified for a pass, usually 50%. (Q grades are no longer used.)

Other Grades

In addition to the grades listed in A and B above, the following grades may be entered by the Faculty Student Administration Office:

Pass Meaning
G Aegrotat Pass
J Pass in recognition of prior learning
L Compensation Pass
Z Special Pass
Non-Pass Meaning
GP Grade pending (usually associated with an aegrotat application)
U Withdrawal approved by Dean
WD Withdrawal during permitted period

Master's Degrees by Coursework

As well as course grades, an overall result should be submitted as follows:

Grade Meaning
S Pass with Distinction
T Pass with Merit
P Pass
F Fail

The following grades are no longer in use, but may appear on student histories:

Grade Percentage range
Q Fail due to not satisfying mandatory course requirements, regardless of overall course mark
R Did not sit final examination
V Withdrawal without Dean’s permission
WX Withdrawal from assessment
X Course cross-credited
Y Exempt
