Penny Boumelha DVC (Academic)

MA, D.Phil. (Oxon.), FAHA

Penny Boumelha is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) having served previously as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at the University of Adelaide (1999–2005). Penny Boumelha holds an M.A. and a D.Phil. in English from the University of Oxford, and has published widely on nineteenth-century fiction (especially Thomas Hardy), on ideologies of gender and race, and on literary genres, as well as on issues in tertiary education and university management.

She was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Humanities in Australia in 1997. She was named in the 1996 Campus Review Independent Teaching Survey as one of Australia’s most respected teachers of English, and has been a member of national bodies including the Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee’s Standing Committee on Education and Students. She has served as an accredited quality auditor of universities in both the New Zealand and the Australian agencies. In 2003 she was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Commonwealth Government of Australia for services to Australian society and the humanities in English language and literature.

Hon. Luamanuvao Winnie Laban QSO AVC (Pasifika)

Luamanuvao Winnie Laban is Assistant Vice Chancellor (Pasifika) having previously served as the Member of Parliament for Mana, Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, and Associate Minister of Social Development, Economic Development, and Trade.

Luamanuvao Winnie Laban is a Social Work graduate from Victoria University and completed a post-graduate Diploma in Development Studies from Massey University. She has worked as a community worker, probation officer, school counsellor, and public service manager. During the 1990s she coordinated the South Pacific Consumer Protection Programme working in 15 Pacific Island nations, and in 1992 she was bestowed the Samoan chiefly title of Luamanuvao.

In 1999 Luamanuvao Winnie Laban was elected as the first Pacific Island woman in the New Zealand Parliament, and she resigned from Parliament in October 2010 to take up the new position of Assistant Vice Chancellor (Pasifika). In 2011 Luamanuvao Winnie Laban was honoured as a Companion of the Queens Service Order.

David Crabbe AVC (Academic)

The Assistant Vice-Chancellor provides leadership in setting goals in teaching and learning at the University, developing policy and process. The goal is to build a strong and inclusive community of practice around teaching and learning to encourage a high level of achievement among staff and students.
