The Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic) is responsible for supporting the quality of teaching and learning at the University and for developing and implementing policy that supports good academic process and outcome. The Office consists of a small, experienced team supported by a number of academic staff from other parts of the University who contribute their time to the overall direction of teaching and learning at Victoria.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of our Office include the following:
  • Academic Audit: Managing the external audit of the University
  • Academic Programme Reviews: Running regular reviews of academic programmes
  • Pathways to Success: Leading change in teaching and learning at the University
  • Academic Policy: Developing academic policy in a range of areas including enrolment, teaching and learning, assessment, new programmes, student workloads
  • Grievances and Misconduct: Managing the resolution of academic grievances and appeals of cases of academic misconduct
  • Teaching and Learning: Liaising with other parts of the University, including VUWSA, to ensure good process relating to teaching and learning.
  • Academic Board: Managing the business of the Academic Board (chaired by the Vice-Chancellor)
  • Academic Committee: Managing the business of the Academic Committee, a committee of the Academic Board, which scrutinizes all programme and course proposals and academic policy and procedures

Associate Professor David Crabbe

Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic)

The Assistant Vice-Chancellor provides leadership in setting goals in teaching and learning at the University, developing policy and process. The goal is to build a strong and inclusive community of practice around teaching and learning to encourage a high level of achievement among staff and students.

Ishbel Guilliard

EA to AVC (Academic)

The Executive Assistant to the AVC (Academic) provides support for the work of the AVC (Academic), manages the AVC (Academic) Office, and acts as a first port of call for academic enquiries. Additionally, the EA acts as secretary to the Academic Board and Academic Committee, as well as working on specific projects as required.

Jenny Christie

Senior Academic Policy Manager

The Academic Policy Manager develops and advises on academic policy on all kinds of teaching and learning issues from enrolment to assessment and the development of new programmes. Additionally, the Academic Policy Manager provides advice and support to the committees considering academic grievances and disciplinary appeals.

Lyn Kelly

Academic Policy Manager

The Academic Policy Manager develops and advises on academic policy on all kinds of teaching and learning issues from enrolment to assessment and the development of new programmes. Additionally, the Academic Policy Manager provides advice and support to the committees considering academic grievances and disciplinary appeals.

Allison Kirkman

Convener of Academic Committee

The convener of Academic Committee ensures that matters concerning academic quality are presented to Academic Committee and advice is provided to Academic Board. Additionally the convener makes decisions on aegrotat applications and represents the AVC(Academic) in his absence.

Willemijn Vermaat

Academic Quality Officer

The Academic Quality Officer coordinates the Academic Programme Reviews and Academic Audit processes. In this role the AQO provides administrative support to the panel and the schools, manages the panel visit, and provides advice, coaching and assistance for staff on preparing for a review and implementing the recommendations after a review has taken place.
