Open Day at Coastal Ecology Lab

In celebration of New Zealand Seaweek, the Victoria University Coastal Ecology Laboratory (VUCEL) is holding its annual open day on Saturday 5 March.

VUCEL

The state-of-the-art marine laboratory in Island Bay is opening its doors to the public, and giving an insight into the life of a marine biologist

Between 10am and 3pm, visitors will be able to see marine creatures up close and learn about the interesting biology of the marine animals and plants on display.

Dr Jeff Shima, VUCEL Director, says there will be something for all ages.

“We’ll have interactive displays of our latest research, a competition to determine the age of fish from their earbones, and a scavenger hunt for our younger guests.”

Experts and specialist researchers will be on hand to answer questions, provide information about a range of exhibits and assist with self-guided tours. There will also be a display of the equipment marine researchers use to study sea life.

This year’s Seaweek theme is “Toiora te Moana—Toiora te Tangata—Healthy Seas, Healthy People”. Dr Shima says the theme highlights the strong dependencies that we have on our oceans.

“Eighty percent of the Earth’s biodiversity lives in the oceans. Humans rely heavily on oceans for food, travel, recreation and health—our oceans may hold medical and pharmaceutical answers that could save the lives of thousands.

“Our staff and students do fascinating research around ocean environments, and look forward to this opportunity to share their work with the public.”

VUCEL’s field work over summer was captured in a video and can be viewed on YouTube.
