Members

All Māori academics may elect to become members of Toihuarewa, and non-Māori academics teaching papers or undertaking research with a significant Māori content may be invited to be part of Toihuarewa by the Toiahurei (PVC Māori).

Members also include iwi representation from Te Āti Awa and Ngāti Toa. Māori students are represented through Ngāi Tauira.

The members of Toihuarewa are:

  1. Toiahurei /Pro Vice-Chancellor (Māori) (Convener).
  2. All Māori academic staff of the University who elect to be members of Toihuarewa.
  3. Associate Deans (Students).
  4. Two representatives of Māori students, appointed by the Convener on the recommendation of Ngāi Tauira.
  5. One representative of Māori general staff, appointed by the Convener on the recommendation of Te Matawhānui.
  6. Two external representatives of Māori, including tangata whenua, with interests in the University, appointed by the Convener in consultation with external Māori stakeholder groups.
  7. Staff teaching in papers or undertaking research with significant Māori content, as invited annually by the Convener.

Toihuarewa is a committee of the University’s Academic Board. It meets every month, usually two weeks before each Academic Board meeting.

Relationship with Faculties

The relationship between Toihuarewa and the other Faculties involves:

  • co-operation in the development of courses, courses of study and qualifications before their consideration by the Academic Board;
  • co-guardianship of teaching and research where significant Māori content or mātauranga Māori is involved;
  • a dual accountability to the University by the heads of Toihuarewa and other Faculties for the proper consideration and development of such learning and research.

Creating New Degrees and Programmes

Toihuarewa has provided input and suggested changes to the templates that Faculties and Heads of Schools follow when creating new degrees and programmes.

This ensures Māori consultation is both sought and expressed in proposals for new degrees and programmes which must be considered by specific University academic committees and the Senior Management Team.
