Projects

Projects that we have committed to in the next few years, and we will be looking for students to work on:

  1. A joint US-NZ program to measure seismic anisotropy of the upper mantle through central South Island. The proposal has our US colleagues (University of Colorado, MIT, Woods Hole) deploying up to 25 broad-band ocean-bottom seismographs along a 1500 km long profile that passes through central South Island. Our component of this project is to install broad bands along the on land portion (160-km long) part of the profile. This project is due to start in 2007.
  2. An onshore-offshore seismic project in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. This is a proposed joint project between University of California(SB), Lamont -Doherty Earth Observatory and Victoria University. The goal of the project is to image crustal and mantle structure beneath the edge of the Transantarctic Mountains.
  3. A small scale seismic refraction study on the Red Hills ophilite ( South Westland) in an attempt to measure in-situ seismic anisotropy of Olivine.

Other projects that we have in mind but no firm proposal has yet to be made:

  1. Crustal structure and teleseismic P-wave delay profile across the Haast highway and into central Otago.
  2. A micro-earthquake study of the central section of the Alpine Fault.
  3. Onshore-offshore seismic experiments in the western North Island. In particular work with the oil industry on onshore-offshore methods to image shallow structure around the coast. Also a longer term plan is try and image the Taranaki Peninsula to upper mantle depths using onshore-offshore methods. 4. Analysis of industry aeromagnetic survey of the central North Island in terms of volcanic structures and Curie Point depth.
  4. Onshore-offshore P-wave delay investigation of the South Wanganui Basin in an attempt to understand mantle thickening.
